Intercollegiate rugby kicked off on February 25, 2012 with the inaugural Mayor's Cup match between Oregon State University and Willamette University. The Seaside mayor Don Larson was also appropriately in attendance the Mayor's Cup. The plan is to host this event again next year and hopefully have a Seaside High School rugby team participating. The game was a close and exciting match with the win coming out for Oregon State over Willamette 35-24. The injuries were minimal, however the staff was able to utilize our new PerfromTex kinesio tape product and it worked very well for the athletes, even in freezing conditions! A community social with players and coaches from both teams followed immediately after the match at American Legion Post 99. Our staff was invited to eat and enjoy the cup awards. The social following the match was an important part of rugby tradition where teams, having just engaged in the battle of a match, join together as friends to celebrate their sport and their communities.
